Honey bees are the most abundant visitors to Australian watermelon but native stingless bees are equally effective as pollinators

چکیده

Despite the benefits of a diverse approach to crop pollination, global food production remains reliant on low diversity managed pollinators, especially European honey bee (Apis mellifera). To facilitate more robust pollinator management and improve resilience system, it is necessary understand regional variation in pollination ecology crops. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus [Thunb.] Matsum & Nakai) highly insect pollinator-dependent even though grown globally across many different climate zones, little known about its growing regions Australia, spanning from tropics arid zone. We compared species composition, visitation rates effectiveness dominant floral visitors 15 farms five major watermelon-growing Australia. found that composition differed significantly among regions, but bees were watermelon flower visitor, with relative abundance varying 73% 94%. However, native (including stingless Tetragonula sp., families Megachilidae Halictidae such as Lasioglossum, Homalictus Lipotriches) flies (particularly Syrphidae sp.) also visited transferred pollen onto flowers. In particular, common several deposited similar amounts bees. Our findings indicate Australian industry utilizes bees, assemblage available pollinating taxa provides an additional opportunity for growers specific regions. Pollination service delivery could be increased by deploying populations (e.g., colonies), employing pollinator-safe land practices well exploring methods increasing efficiency colonies.

Sequence and expression pattern of the germ line marker vasa in honey bees and stingless bees

Queens and workers of social insects differ in the rates of egg laying. Using genomic information we determined the sequence of vasa, a highly conserved gene specific to the germ line of metazoans, for the honey bee and four stingless bees. The vasa sequence of social bees differed from that of other insects in two motifs. By RT-PCR we confirmed the germ line specificity of Amvasa expression in...

Are honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) native to the British Isles?

Biological, historical and archaeological evidence proves that honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) have been present in the British Isles for at least 4000 years, and suggests that they probably entered from southern Europe after the retreat of the last Ice Age. Recent studies show that rather than having been destroyed by disease in the early 20th century, or obliterated by imports of other strains...

Honey bees are predisposed to win-shift but can learn to win-stay

The ability of honey bees, Apis mellifra, to avoid returns to locations recently depleted of sugar solution (win-shift) or to return to locations recently depleted of sugar solution (win-stay) was tested. Bees collected sugar solution from a small matrix of six cells. During each of a series of trials, they first visited a randomly ‘determined set of three cells. They were then allowed to freel...

Context affects nestmate recognition errors in honey bees and stingless bees.

Nestmate recognition studies, where a discriminator first recognises and then behaviourally discriminates (accepts/rejects) another individual, have used a variety of methodologies and contexts. This is potentially problematic because recognition errors in discrimination behaviour are predicted to be context-dependent. Here we compare the recognition decisions (accept/reject) of discriminators ...

Native bees buffer the negative impact of climate warming on honey bee pollination of watermelon crops.

If climate change affects pollinator-dependent crop production, this will have important implications for global food security because insect pollinators contribute to production for 75% of the leading global food crops. We investigate whether climate warming could result in indirect impacts upon crop pollination services via an overlooked mechanism, namely temperature-induced shifts in the diu...
